Roll-out of public charging points across West Sussex
Using an electric vehicle in Adur and Worthing will become easier with the roll-out of public charging points – with the community helping to decide where they should go.
Adur & Worthing Councils is working with West Sussex County Council and Connected Kerb on the installation of charging points in a £1.8 million project.
The cost is being met by funds from the Department for Transport and Connected Kerb, a UK provider of electric vehicle charging equipment.
The county-wide scheme will involve the installation of up to 450 charging points in roadside parking bays and 100 in public car parks, including 15 points proposed in Worthing and 10 in Adur.
Proposed potential sites in Adur and Worthing
The public now has the opportunity to comment on each of the sites proposed, as well as to suggest other sites that could be used as the scheme is expanded.
The new proposed charging bays in Adur will be at Freshbrook Road, Hayley Road and Winston Road in Lancing, Cromleigh Way and Highdown in Southwick, Harbour Way and Downsway in Shoreham, and Millfield, Test Road and White Styles Road in Sompting.
The potential sites for the bays in Worthing are at Anglesea Street, Chesswood Road, Gordon Road, Newland Road, Pelham Road, Rowlands Road, Southfield Road, Victoria Road, West Parade, Westcourt Road, Winton Place and Wordsworth Road.
Reducing exhaust emissions by accomodating electric vehicles
Cllr Angus Dunn, Adur’s Cabinet Member for Finance and Resources, said: “We are working closely with the county council to provide the electric vehicle charging points we need to support more sustainable modes of transport now and for the future.
“Reducing emissions is a key commitment for the Councils and this is a fantastic scheme that will take us another step towards that. The Key now is to establish the most appropriate locations for these bays and I would urge Adur residents to have their say.”
Cllr Martin McCabe, Worthing’s Cabinet Member for Regeneration, said: “The use of electric vehicles is an important part of reducing harmful exhaust emissions in our continued and vital fight against climate change.
“But we are in real need of more charging points to accommodate not only the number of electric cars we currently have on the road, but for a growing market in the future. It is a win-win situation for residents and visitors, as the funding is coming from central government.”
Electric hybrid vehicles have significant emission benefits over conventional vehicles while all-electric vehicles produce zero tailpipe emissions.
