Borde Hill Horse Trials is once again taking place over the May Bank Holiday weekend. The event always attracts top class competitors such as Tina Cook and Andrew Nicholson alongside large numbers of local and national riders. In previous years the event has drawn huge numbers of spectators, not just to watch the equine action, but to peruse the trade stands such as Vero Equestrian and sample some of the best local food and drink at the likes of The Gorilla Kitchen.
The Horse Trials is affiliated to and run under British Eventing rules and regulations, ensuring everything possible is done to keep all horses and riders safe. All three phases of the competition – dressage, show jumping and cross country – take place within the grounds of Borde Hill Gardens, positioned against the beautiful backdrop of Borde Hill House. The event is aimed at grassroots riders and offers classes from BE80 to open Novice. Showjumping and cross country course walks with accredited coaches Sam Jennings and Tracy Brown are taking place on Friday 24th and Saturday 25th June for all BE 80 competitors.
For the spectator, this is a perfect day out, with all phases of the competition taking place in one day. Starting at 8am, the dressage is a set of compulsory movements ridden in front of a judge who will preside over a whole section. Competitors then complete a course of coloured, knock down show jumping fences in an arena before proceeding to the final cross country phase over fixed, natural fences spread over undulating terrain.
This year, Borde Hill welcomes advanced cross country course designer Helen West to the team. Helen brings with her a wealth of course design experience and is only the second woman in the UK to achieve advanced level cross country course design accreditation. Joining Helen in giving the cross country phase a different feel is local course builder, Sussex Courses.
Organiser Lucy Cunliffe comments “We are looking forward to another thrilling weekend of competition, we are especially excited to see the new cross country design and hope that all competitors enjoy riding round it. You couldn’t ask for a more beautiful setting and we hope to see the event growing and evolving over the coming years.”
Borde Hill Horse Trials has been successfully run by KH Events since 2009. The team has a wealth of experience with joint organisers, Bill Kear, being best known in the equestrian world for delivering top class arenas and gallops, and John Hill of JH Builders, paying attention to the logistics and site management.
