A22 in East Grinstead to be resurfaced
One of the busiest stretches of the A22 in East Grinstead will be resurfaced soon.
The section of London Road between the junction with Yew Lane and the Surrey boundary has shown significant signs of weakening. The new surface will be smoother, which will reduce road noise and provide a better running surface, and will also be more resilient to potholes, reducing the potential for more frequent and costly disruption from localised.
The project is set to start on Monday 7th March and is expected to take about a week, subject to outside factors.
Restrictions and works for resurfacing the A22 in East Grinstead
The main works will take place between 8pm and 6am each day under a full road closure, with through traffic diverted via a signed route. Access to homes and businesses will be maintained, although delays could occur for operational or safety reasons and access to some side roads off London Road may be restricted whilst works are taking place in that location.
Daytime restrictions, including a 30mph speed limit, will be in force for safety reasons until the final resurfacing is completed. New road markings will be installed as part of the scheme.
West Sussex County Council spokesperson said: “Our teams will be working hard to deliver long-term improvements to the A22 in East Grinstead.
“We understand that work of this nature may cause disruption for both residents and businesses – but the investment will provide a smoother and quieter road surface and will greatly reduce the potential need for more frequent and costly repairs later down the line.
“In opting for night-time work, we have considered the wider disruption to the public that would be caused through daytime resurfacing. We will do all we can to try to minimise inconvenience, with every effort made to carry out the noisiest operations in the earliest part of the evening and before 11pm.”
More than 20% of the aggregate used in this scheme will be recycled materials recovered from other roads in and around West Sussex. The scheme is estimated to cost approximately £250,000.
