New evolving arts exhibition that celebrates community

Our Place Willow Arch, Community Takeover

Phoenix Art Space’s Community Takeover arts exhibition is back this autumn. The Main Gallery will be transformed into a dedicated space for community projects to be celebrated with visitors invited to contribute to an evolving exhibition. The theme this year is stories.

ON show is artwork produced by residents from East Brighton, Moulsecoomb & Bevendean and Hangleton & Knoll during the Our Place project, a ground-breaking community initiative created in partnership with Brighton Festival. Watch 2 Metre Conversations, a series of short films created by artist Katy Beinart and filmmaker John Edwards, and shot during the initial lockdown in 2020. These moving and powerful conversations with local people from a wide range of backgrounds show the diversity of experience during the pandemic.

You can go along and tell stories through activities such as window drawings, adding to their forest of books and creating fabric decorations for our willow enclosure.

A full programme of supporting workshops and activities will be taking place throughout the month. Community Takeover – Stories is supported by Centre for Arts & Wellbeing at University of Brighton, Brighton & Hove City Council, Brighton Festival and Phoenix Community Association.

Chloe Hoare, Community & Learning Programme Manager, says – “Providing access to the arts is at the heart of our community engagement programme. We want everyone to feel able to participate in creative opportunities at Phoenix Art Space and we enjoy working closely with the Phoenix Community Association to ensure that our neighbours feel welcome here. Since the pandemic we have taken our work to people’s doorsteps in the form of free art packs and online courses, encouraging our local community to take part in something creative whilst at home. We can’t wait to throw open our doors this September and invite everyone to contribute to this evolving arts exhibition in person.”
